Ways to Support North Shore Families Who Struggle During the Holidays

The holiday season is meant to feel warm, joyful, and connected — but for many local families, December can be an overwhelming financial challenge. Rising living costs, reduced work hours, and the increasing price of essentials mean some households simply cannot afford gifts, festive meals, or even basic winter needs.

The good news is that even small acts of generosity can make a meaningful difference right here in our North Shore community. Here are thoughtful ways to help make Christmas brighter for a family in need:

Donate to the North Shore Christmas Bureau
The Christmas Bureau supports low-income families with toys, gift cards, and essentials. Gift cards for groceries or teenagers are especially helpful because they allow families to choose what they need most.

Support the North Shore Harvest Project
This organization provides food support and meals year-round. December is their busiest season. A small monthly donation or a one-time holiday gift helps them serve more families facing food insecurity.

Give to Local School Holiday Hampers
Many North Shore elementary and secondary schools quietly prepare hampers for families who need them. Contact your local school office, they can tell you what items are most in need this year.

Drop Warm Clothing at Local Shelters
Coats, gloves, socks, and warm boots are always needed as temperatures drop. Men's and youth sizes are typically the most under-donated.

Buy from Local Businesses Supporting Holiday Causes
Many shops offer “buy one, donate one” events or fundraisers that support community programs. Shopping locally helps twice: a family in need receives help and a small North Shore business gets support.

Offer Your Time
Volunteering for a few hours at a food drive, toy drive, or community meal is incredibly impactful, especially in December when organizations operate at full capacity. Even one small contribution can lighten the load for a family trying to make the season special.

Community care is what makes the North Shore feel like home, and together we can create a more hopeful holiday season for everyone. If you know a neighbour or friend who may need support this season but doesn’t know where to turn, please reach out, I’m always happy to help connect you with local resources.
